English / Literacy first

Teaching with Acorn in South Africa

A practical route into Thinkeracy for primary schools, with further applications for learners needing additional language or learning support.

South Africa · two flexible routes

English is the starting point. Thinkeracy is the purpose.

Field Journal Missions provide meaningful contexts for reading, vocabulary, discussion, writing, reasoning and reflection. Science and History supply the themes; English provides a natural place to explore and express ideas. Acorn supplements, rather than replaces, prescribed teaching.

Option A · core pathway

English / Literacy

One Mission every fortnight

Two Field Journals each year: Books 1 and 3 (20 Missions in total). Integrate thinking into an existing English period, where school planning allows.

Option B · expanded pathway

English / Thinkeracy

One Mission every week

Four Field Journals each year: Books 1, 2, 3 and 4 (up to 40 Missions). A regular opportunity for discussion, optional homework, family conversations and holiday Missions.

Both are optional approaches. Thinking Gym is an analogy for exercising thinking, not a compulsory subject or a separate Acorn product. Schools can adapt pace, time and the balance of classroom and home exploration.

Four years. Two pathways. One purpose.

The same two core journals are available to every school. The expanded weekly route adds a History journal and a further Science / Geography journal each year. These are thematic recommendations, not a ranking of books by difficulty.

Why these themes? Each term offers a different world for children to explore. Natural Sciences introduces living things and the world around us, History invites children to consider people, evidence and perspectives, and Earth and space themes encourage curiosity about our planet and beyond. These connections complement the South African curriculum, while the focus throughout remains on developing thinking, discussion, reasoning and communication through English.

Option A uses Books 1 and 3. Option B includes all four books. With 10 Missions per book, 20 fortnightly Missions or up to 40 weekly Missions are flexible planning targets. Journals are not graded by inherent difficulty. Adventurer and Investigator offer different depths of engagement.

Additional support in secondary schools

EAL / additional language support

Use the accessible topics, illustrations and open-ended prompts as a context for vocabulary, reading, conversation and written expression. Adapt language demands to learners' needs.

SEN / additional learning support

Different ways to respond, including discussion, drawing and supported writing, can help learners participate at an appropriate level. Teachers select age-respectful materials and suitable scaffolding.

These are potential supplementary applications, not claims that Acorn is a specialist intervention or replaces individual support plans.
